SIKINOS

Sikinos is a small rocky island south of the Cyclades. The first testimonies date from the 3rd millennium EBA at Palaiokastro north and Katergo in the middle of the east coast.  The MBA have left no traces even if some mythological references may suggest that it was habited. In the historical times the ancient city of Sikinos was located southwest of the island at Agia Marina hill, overlooking a small anchorage. Architectural remains of the ancient city are still visible and the location of the cemetery has been identified on the south slope. Not far to the East still stood a Roman funerary monument converted into a Christian church in the monastery of Episkopi. Another humbler settlement has been located at Palaiokastro north of the island. Very little is known about the religious life but surely Dionysos may have been worshipped there since he appears on the Hellenistic Sikinos coins.
