KIMOLOS

Kimolos is a small island in the east of Milos. It was known since antiquity for its resources mainly the chalk (kimolia) which gave its name to the island. However, prehistory finds are rare. We mention a protocycladic marble figurine of unknown provenance, as well as few fragments of Mycenaean vases found at Ellinika. The ancient city was also located in this area South West of the island. Few buildings have been found due to the advance of the sea but excavations have uncovered several graves from the cemetery used from the Mycenaean time until the Hellenistic period. In this context, the geometric phase is important for the quality and number of vessels. Archaic period dates one of the oldest carved stelae. Concerning the religious life very little is known, an inscription tells us that Athena was worshipped and had a temple on the island.
